Refrigerator Problems We Fix
Refrigerator not cooling, or the fresh-food side is warm
The most common cause is airflow, not refrigerant. Dust-packed condenser coils, a stalled condenser fan or a failed evaporator fan can all leave the fridge warm while the compressor keeps running. A fresh-food section that warms up while the freezer stays cold often points to a frost-blocked evaporator or a stuck air damper. We test the fans, the defrost system, the start relay and the controls before anyone talks about the compressor.
Frost or ice building up in the freezer
A sheet of frost on the back panel of the freezer usually means the automatic defrost system has failed: the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat or the timer or control board. Frost around the door opening points to a worn door gasket instead. Chipping the ice away fixes nothing for long. It comes back within days until the faulty part is replaced.
Water leaking on the floor or under the crisper drawers
Water inside the fridge is usually a frozen or clogged defrost drain. Water on the floor can come from the drain pan, a cracked water inlet valve or a loose supply line to the ice maker and dispenser. We trace the leak to its source so it doesn’t return.
Loud buzzing, clicking or rattling
A fan blade striking ice, a worn condenser fan motor or a compressor that clicks on and off without starting each sounds different. Telling them apart is half the diagnosis. A fridge that clicks every few minutes and never gets cold needs attention quickly.
Ice maker or water dispenser not working
Low water flow, a clogged filter, a failed inlet valve or a frozen fill tube can stop ice production. See our ice maker repair page for the details.
Refrigerator not running at all
If the lights work but nothing runs, the problem may be the control board, the start relay or the compressor itself. If nothing works at all, check the outlet and the breaker first, then call us.

Sacramento Summers Are Hard on Refrigerators
Valley summers regularly reach the triple digits, and a refrigerator has to push that heat out through its condenser. Two things help it cope:
- Keep the coils clean. Dust and pet hair on the condenser coils make the compressor run longer and hotter. Cleaning them once or twice a year is the cheapest fix there is. Here is how to clean refrigerator coils.
- Be careful with garage fridges. A refrigerator in an uninsulated garage can struggle on hot afternoons. Many models are not designed for those temperatures, so check your owner’s manual.
What to Expect When We Come Out
- Book a time. Call (510) 677-7166 or request an appointment online. We work Monday to Saturday, 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.
- Your technician arrives ready to work. Expect a company-branded service vehicle, a uniformed technician, shoe covers inside your home, and the troubleshooting schematics for your appliance.
- Diagnosis first, then a clear recommendation. We find the cause, explain it in plain language and tell you whether the repair is worth doing before any work starts. The service call is $80.
- Repair, often on the same visit. Our trucks carry the most commonly needed repair parts, so many jobs are finished on the day of the service call. If a part has to be ordered, we schedule the return visit with you.
Repair or Replace?
Most refrigerator faults are fans, defrost parts, valves, gaskets, relays and controls, and these are usually far cheaper to repair than buying a new fridge. Replacement starts to make sense when an older refrigerator needs a compressor or sealed-system repair. We will tell you honestly which side of that line your fridge is on.

Refrigerator Repair FAQ
How long will my food stay safe if the fridge stops cooling?
According to USDA food-safety guidance, a refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours if the door stays closed. A full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours, and a half-full one for about 24. Keep the doors shut and call us as early in the day as you can.
Should I unplug my refrigerator before the technician arrives?
Not usually. If the freezer is iced over, unplugging it lets the ice melt and hides the frost pattern that helps us diagnose a defrost failure. Leave it running unless it smells of burning or trips the breaker.
Can you fix a refrigerator that is leaking water?
Yes. Most leaks come from a blocked defrost drain, the water inlet valve or the supply line, and these are routine repairs.
Do you repair built-in and high-end refrigerators?
We service built-in, integrated and column refrigerators as well as standard models. That includes high-end brands such as Sub-Zero, Thermador, Viking, Monogram, JennAir, Miele and Dacor.
How quickly can you come out?
We work Monday to Saturday, 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. Call early in the day for the best chance of a visit soon. Same-day service is available.
