Refrigerator Not Cooling? What to Check Before You Call

A warm refrigerator is urgent: perishable food kept above 40°F for more than 2 hours should be thrown out (USDA guidance). The good news is that many cooling problems have a simple cause. Work through the checks below, then use the symptoms to figure out whether you need a repair.

While you troubleshoot: keep the doors closed as much as possible, move the most perishable food to a cooler with ice, and put an appliance thermometer in the fridge. The fresh-food section should be at 37°F to 40°F and the freezer at 0°F.

Quick Checks You Can Do Yourself

  1. Power and settings. Is the light on? Check that the temperature wasn’t changed by accident, and that the fridge isn’t in demo, showroom or vacation mode. Demo mode keeps the lights and display on with the cooling off.
  2. Door seal. Close the door on a sheet of paper. If it slides out easily, the gasket isn’t sealing in that spot. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water and check for tears. A fridge that leans forward can also leave the doors slightly open.
  3. Air vents inside. Cold air comes from the freezer through vents. Overpacked shelves or a container pushed against a vent can starve the fresh-food side of cold air.
  4. Condenser coils. Coils under or behind the fridge get covered in dust and pet hair, so the fridge can’t release heat. Unplug it and vacuum the coils with a brush attachment.
  5. Condenser fan. On most fridges with coils underneath, a fan next to the compressor at the back should run when the compressor runs. If it’s stopped or blocked, the fridge overheats.
  6. Room and space. A fridge in a hot garage or squeezed into a cabinet with no ventilation gap struggles in a Sacramento summer.

What the Symptoms Usually Mean

Freezer cold, fridge warm

The cooling system works, but cold air isn’t reaching the fresh-food section. The usual causes are a failed evaporator fan in the freezer, or frost blocking the evaporator coil because the defrost system has failed. Look at the back panel of the freezer: a thick layer of frost or ice is a sign of a defrost problem (the heater, the thermostat or the control).

Both fridge and freezer warm

This points to the condenser side: dirty coils, a failed condenser fan, a start relay or a compressor that isn’t running. If you hear the fridge click on and off every few minutes without running, the start relay or compressor is a likely suspect.

Fridge cools, then warms, then cools

Often a defrost system that isn’t working properly, so frost builds up slowly until airflow stops.

Fridge too cold, freezing food

A damper that’s stuck open, a faulty thermistor or a control that doesn’t read the temperature correctly.

Running all the time and still warm

A refrigerant leak or a sealed-system fault is possible, especially on older refrigerators. Only a technician can diagnose this.

Try a Manual Defrost If You See Heavy Frost

If the freezer back panel is covered in frost, emptying the fridge and leaving it unplugged with the doors open for a day melts the ice. Put towels down for the water. If it cools normally afterward but the problem returns in a week or two, the defrost system needs to be repaired. The manual defrost is only a temporary fix.

When to Call for Repair

Call a technician if the coils are clean, the vents are clear, the door seals, and the fridge still isn’t reaching 40°F within a few hours, or if you notice a fan that doesn’t run, heavy frost, or a compressor that clicks but won’t start. The model number on the label inside the fridge helps us bring the right parts. A fridge that is also leaking water may have a related drain problem; see what to do when your refrigerator leaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my freezer cold but my refrigerator warm?

Usually the evaporator fan has stopped, or frost from a defrost fault is blocking the air flow from the freezer.

How long should a refrigerator take to cool down?

After a reset or a move, several hours, and up to a day to fully settle. A fridge that has been running normally should never be above 40°F.

Can dirty coils really stop a fridge from cooling?

Yes. Heavily clogged coils make the compressor run hot and long, and cooling falls off. Cleaning them once or twice a year helps.

Is it worth repairing a refrigerator that isn’t cooling?

Fans, relays, sensors and defrost parts are common repairs and usually worthwhile. A compressor or sealed-system repair on an old fridge is a closer call. We’ll tell you honestly which makes sense.

Do you offer same-day refrigerator repair?
