Ice Maker Problems We Fix

Ice maker not making ice

Start with the basics: the shut-off arm or switch must be in the “on” position, and the freezer must be cold enough. Most ice makers need the freezer at about 0°F to cycle properly. If both are fine, the usual suspects are a failed water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube, a clogged water filter or a faulty ice maker module. We test each one rather than swapping parts on a guess.

Small, hollow or cloudy cubes

Undersized or hollow cubes mean the mold isn’t filling. That points to low water flow: an overdue filter, a kinked supply line, low household water pressure or an inlet valve partly blocked by mineral scale.

Ice maker leaking or water freezing in the bin

Water that overflows the mold and freezes into a block usually comes from an inlet valve that doesn’t close fully, or from a refrigerator that isn’t level. Leaks behind the fridge are often the supply line or the valve connection.

Ice jammed or the dispenser not working

Ice clumps in the bucket when it is rarely used, or when the freezer runs too warm and then refreezes. If the dispenser auger turns but no ice comes out, the bucket is often frozen solid. If it doesn’t turn at all, we check the auger motor, the door flap and the dispenser switch.

Ice maker making noise or cycling constantly

Some clicking and the clatter of falling cubes is normal. Repeated buzzing with no water entering usually means the inlet valve is energized but not opening.

Ice Makers We Service

  • Built-in refrigerator ice makers (freezer-door and in-door ice systems)
  • Standalone and undercounter ice makers
  • Ice machines

We service ice makers from all the major brands we work with, including Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, KitchenAid, Frigidaire, Maytag, Kenmore, Sub-Zero, Monogram, JennAir and Viking.

If the whole refrigerator is warm and not just the ice maker, see refrigerator repair or freezer repair.

Quick Checks Before You Call

  • Confirm the ice maker is switched on and the shut-off arm is down.
  • Check the freezer temperature. It should be around 0°F.
  • Replace the water filter if it is past its change date.
  • Make sure the water supply valve behind or under the fridge is fully open.
  • Empty the bucket and break up any clumps.

If none of that brings the ice back, the fault is probably a part, and that’s where we come in. More troubleshooting is in our guide to ice maker troubleshooting.

Ice Maker Repair FAQ

How long after a repair until I get ice?

A refrigerator ice maker usually produces its first batch within a few hours once the freezer is at temperature, and it takes about a day to fill the bin. Throw away the first batch or two after any repair or filter change.

Is it worth repairing an ice maker, or should I replace the whole unit?

The ice maker assembly, the inlet valve and the filter can all be replaced on their own, so an ice maker problem rarely means replacing the refrigerator.

Can low water pressure stop my ice maker?

Yes. Ice makers and dispensers need adequate pressure to fill. A clogged filter or a partly closed supply valve is the most common reason the pressure drops.

Do you repair standalone ice makers?

Yes. We repair standalone and undercounter ice makers and ice machines as well as refrigerator ice makers.
