Freezer Problems We Fix
Freezer not freezing or food softening
On upright and refrigerator freezers, the cause is often a failed evaporator fan, a defrost failure that has blocked the coil with ice, or dirty condenser coils. On chest and deep freezers, which have no fans in the cabinet, we look at the thermostat, the start relay, the condenser and the compressor. We measure temperatures and test components so you know exactly what failed.
Heavy frost or ice buildup
Frost-free freezers that ice up have a defrost problem: the heater, the defrost thermostat or the control. Frost concentrated near the door means warm, humid air is getting in past a torn or loose door gasket. Chest freezers are manual-defrost by design and need defrosting once ice is about a quarter inch thick. A thick layer makes them work much harder.
Freezer running constantly
A freezer that never cycles off is struggling to shed heat. Check for blocked vents, dusty coils and a failing gasket. A unit in a hot garage may also be operating outside its design range.
Water leaking from the freezer
A clogged defrost drain is the classic cause in frost-free models. In chest freezers, check whether the drain plug is seated. Meltwater from a failed defrost cycle can also refreeze and crack the drain pan. More in our guide to freezer leaking water.
Noisy freezer
Squealing or grinding usually comes from a fan motor, and a fan hitting ice makes a rhythmic ticking. Loud clicking with no cooling can be the start relay or the compressor.

While You Wait for the Technician
- Keep the door or lid closed. USDA guidance is that a full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours and a half-full freezer for about 24 hours when left closed.
- Move the most valuable items to a working freezer, or into a cooler with ice.
- Don’t run a hair dryer on a frosted freezer or chip at the ice. Heat and sharp tools can crack plastic liners and puncture refrigerant lines.
- Note what you see and hear (frost pattern, clicking, fan noise). It speeds up the diagnosis.
What to Expect When We Come Out
- Book a time. Call (510) 677-7166 or request an appointment online. We work Monday to Saturday, 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.
- Your technician arrives ready to work. Expect a company-branded service vehicle, a uniformed technician, shoe covers inside your home, and the troubleshooting schematics for your appliance.
- Diagnosis first, then a clear recommendation. We find the cause, explain it in plain language and tell you whether the repair is worth doing before any work starts. The service call is $80.
- Repair, often on the same visit. Our trucks carry the most commonly needed repair parts, so many jobs are finished on the day of the service call. If a part has to be ordered, we schedule the return visit with you.

Freezer Repair FAQ
What temperature should my freezer be?
0°F (-18°C) is the standard for safe long-term food storage. Freezers that hover several degrees warmer will soften ice cream first. That’s often the first sign of trouble.
Is it worth repairing a chest freezer?
Chest freezers are simple machines. Thermostats, relays and drain issues are inexpensive repairs. A failed compressor on an older, low-cost unit is the main case where replacement can make more sense, and we’ll tell you if that’s the situation.
Why does my freezer have frost but the food is soft?
That combination usually means the evaporator coil is iced over from a defrost failure, so cold air can no longer circulate. It needs a repair, not just a manual defrost.
Do you repair freezers in garages?
Yes. Garage freezers face extra heat in Valley summers, and we’ll check whether the unit is suited to its location as part of the visit.
