Dryer Problems We Fix

Dryer not heating

The parts involved depend on the fuel. In an electric dryer, a broken heating element, a blown thermal fuse or a failed high-limit thermostat are the usual causes. In a gas dryer, it’s typically the igniter, the gas valve coils or the flame sensor. A thermal fuse doesn’t blow for no reason, though. It’s a safety device that trips when the dryer overheats, so we always look for the cause behind it, usually a restricted vent.

Dryer takes too long to dry

Nine times out of ten this is airflow: a lint-clogged vent, a crushed transition hose behind the dryer, a long vent run with too many bends, or a stuck exterior flap. A dryer that can’t exhaust moist air just tumbles warm, wet clothes. We check the airflow along with the heat circuit.

Dryer won’t start

If the drum won’t turn, the door switch, the start switch, the thermal fuse (on many models it cuts power to the motor too), the drive belt or the motor itself may be the cause. A hum with no tumbling often means a broken belt or a seized motor.

Dryer stops mid-cycle

Overheating is the classic cause: a motor shutting down on its internal overload, or a cycling thermostat tripping because the vent is restricted. Moisture-sensing dryers may also end cycles early when the sensor bars are coated with fabric-softener film.

Squealing, thumping or grinding noises

Worn drum rollers, the idler pulley, the drum glides or the belt make distinctive noises. Catching a squeal early is cheaper than waiting for a pulley to seize and snap the belt.

Dryer Safety: Don’t Ignore the Vent

According to the National Fire Protection Association, failure to clean is the leading factor in home dryer fires. Lint is extremely flammable, and a clogged vent traps both heat and lint. Clean the lint screen after every load, keep the area behind the dryer clear, use rigid or semi-rigid metal ducting rather than plastic foil, and have the full vent run cleaned regularly. If clothes are hot to the touch but still damp, or the laundry room gets hot and humid, stop and get the vent checked. Read more about preventing dryer fires.

Dryer Repair FAQ

Why does my dryer run but not heat?

On electric dryers, the heating element, thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat are the usual causes. On gas dryers, it’s the igniter or the gas valve coils. A blown thermal fuse usually means the vent is restricted, so the vent should be checked too.

Is it worth repairing an old dryer?

Dryers are mechanically simple, and most repairs (fuses, elements, igniters, belts, rollers) are inexpensive. That makes dryer repair worthwhile in most cases.

Do you repair gas dryers?

Yes. We repair both gas and electric dryers, including stacked units.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?

Many manufacturers and fire-safety groups recommend at least once a year, and more often for large households or long vent runs.
