A dryer that tumbles but stays cold is one of the most common appliance calls. Usually one part has failed, and very often that failure was caused by a clogged vent. Fixing the part without clearing the vent means it fails again. Here’s how to narrow it down.
Check These First
- The breaker (electric dryers). An electric dryer uses a double breaker. If one half trips, the drum and the controls still run but the heating element gets no power. Switch the breaker fully off, then back on.
- The settings. Make sure you’re not on “air fluff”, “no heat” or a delicate setting with very low heat.
- The gas supply (gas dryers). Check that the gas valve behind the dryer is open and that other gas appliances work.
- The lint screen and vent. Clean the lint screen, then go outside while the dryer runs. You should feel a strong flow of warm air at the vent hood. Weak airflow means a clogged or crushed duct.
Electric Dryer: The Usual Failed Parts
Thermal fuse
A safety fuse that blows when the dryer overheats. On many dryers it cuts the heat. On some models, such as many Whirlpool and Maytag dryers, it stops the dryer from starting at all. A blown fuse almost always means airflow was restricted, so the vent has to be cleared too.
Heating element
The element is a coil of wire that can break. Often you can’t see it from outside. A technician tests it for continuity.
High-limit thermostat and cycling thermostat
These control and limit the temperature. When they fail, the dryer gets no heat or cycles the heat incorrectly.
Gas Dryer: The Usual Failed Parts
Igniter
The igniter should glow and light the burner. If it doesn’t glow, it’s likely broken.
Gas valve coils
A classic gas dryer fault: the igniter glows, then goes out, and the burner never lights. Or the dryer heats at first and stops once warm. Worn gas valve coils are a common cause.
Flame sensor and thermal fuse
The flame sensor tells the dryer when the igniter is hot enough. Gas dryers also have thermal fuses that blow when the dryer overheats.
Dryer Heats, but Clothes Take Forever
If the dryer gets warm but loads take two cycles, the problem is almost always airflow: a clogged vent, a crushed duct behind the dryer, a long vent run with many bends, or a stuck flap on the exterior hood. Overloading the drum and a moisture sensor coated with dryer-sheet residue can also make cycles end too soon or run too long. Clean the sensor bars inside the drum with a little rubbing alcohol.
Why the Vent Matters So Much
A restricted vent makes the dryer run hot, blows thermal fuses, wears out heating elements and is a leading cause of dryer fires. If your duct is white vinyl or thin foil, replace it with rigid or semi-rigid metal duct. Our dryer installation guide explains the right vent setup.
When to Call a Technician
Testing parts means working inside the dryer with the power disconnected, and gas dryers involve the gas valve. If the breaker, settings and vent check out, a technician can test the fuse, element, thermostats or gas components and fix the cause, not just the symptom.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my dryer running but not heating?
On electric dryers: a half-tripped breaker, a blown thermal fuse, a failed element or a thermostat. On gas dryers: the igniter, the gas valve coils, the flame sensor or the thermal fuse.
Can I just replace the thermal fuse?
Replacing it brings the heat back, but the fuse blew for a reason. Usually that’s a restricted vent. Clear the vent, or the new fuse will blow again.
How often should I clean the dryer vent?
Clean the lint screen every load and check the vent airflow regularly. Have the duct cleaned whenever drying times get longer.
Is it worth repairing a dryer that doesn’t heat?
Usually yes. Fuses, elements, thermostats, igniters and valve coils are common repairs.
