Please Don’t Open Up a Microwave Yourself
A microwave’s high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous electrical charge even after the unit is unplugged. Internal repairs, such as the magnetron, the diode, the capacitor and the door switches, should be done by a trained technician who knows how to discharge and test these parts safely.
Microwave Problems We Fix
Microwave runs but doesn’t heat
The light is on and the turntable spins, but the food stays cold. This is the classic high-voltage fault: the magnetron, the high-voltage diode, the capacitor or the transformer. A failing door switch can also prevent heating. We test the circuit to pinpoint the part before quoting.
Sparking or arcing inside
Stop using it right away. A burned or greasy waveguide cover (the small panel on the inside wall), peeling interior paint or a damaged rack support are the usual causes. Caught early, it is often a simple repair. Run it while it’s arcing and it can damage the magnetron.
Microwave completely dead, or blows a fuse when the door closes
A blown main fuse often follows a failed door switch or monitor switch. We replace the failed switch as well as the fuse, otherwise the new fuse blows too.
Keypad or control panel not responding
Touchpads (membrane switches) wear out and control boards can fail, especially after a power surge. Some keypad faults are just the child lock, so check it first.
Turntable not turning, or noisy operation
The turntable motor, the coupler or the roller ring. Loud humming or buzzing that’s new can point to the magnetron or the transformer.
Over-the-range vent fan or light not working
The exhaust fan motor, the light sockets, the switches or the thermal cut-out. These are common repairs on over-the-range units.

Repair or Replace Your Microwave?
Here’s our honest rule of thumb. A basic countertop microwave usually costs less to replace than to repair, so we’ll tell you if that’s the case. Over-the-range, built-in, drawer and convection microwaves cost much more to replace, and replacement also means mounting brackets, venting and trim kits. Repairing those is usually the better value.
What to Expect When We Come Out

Microwave Repair FAQ
Why does my microwave run but not heat?
Usually a failed magnetron, high-voltage diode, capacitor or door switch. These parts carry high voltage, so the repair should be done by a technician.
Is it safe to use a microwave that sparks?
No. Stop using it and unplug it. Sparking usually comes from a damaged waveguide cover or interior coating, and continued use can damage the magnetron.
Is it worth repairing an over-the-range microwave?
Often yes. Replacing one means a new unit plus removal, mounting and venting work, so repairing a fan, switch, control or magnetron is usually the better value.
