Oven Problems We Fix

Oven not heating, or heating very slowly

On an electric oven, the bake element often fails visibly with a blister, a break or a burn mark, but it can also fail with no outward sign. On a gas oven, the most common culprit is a weak igniter: it glows, but not hot enough to open the gas valve, so the oven never lights or takes ages to preheat. We also test the temperature sensor, the safety valve, the thermal fuse and the control board.

Temperature is off and food burns or comes out underdone

An oven that runs 25 to 50 degrees off usually has a faulty temperature sensor or a control that needs calibrating. Uneven baking can also come from a failed convection fan or a broil element that switches on during bake. An inexpensive oven thermometer is a good way to confirm the problem before we arrive.

Broiler not working

The broil element or broil igniter, its wiring or the control relay. On gas ranges with a bottom broiler drawer, we check the igniter and the valve.

Self-clean problems and a locked door

A door that stays locked after a self-clean cycle is usually a failed door lock motor or switch. Self-clean temperatures are extreme, and that heat is also a common moment for thermal fuses and control boards to fail. If your oven quit right after self-cleaning, tell us. It narrows things down.

Error codes and an unresponsive control panel

F-codes and other error codes point toward a circuit, not always the failed part. We read the code, test the sensor or circuit it refers to, and only replace the control board if it is actually faulty.

Door won’t close properly

Worn hinges or a damaged door gasket let heat escape, which means longer preheat, uneven cooking and a hot cabinet front. These are straightforward repairs.

What to Expect When We Come Out

  1. Book a time. Call (510) 677-7166 or request an appointment online. We work Monday to Saturday, 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.
  2. Your technician arrives ready to work. Expect a company-branded service vehicle, a uniformed technician, shoe covers inside your home, and the troubleshooting schematics for your appliance.
  3. Diagnosis first, then a clear recommendation. We find the cause, explain it in plain language and tell you whether the repair is worth doing before any work starts. The service call is $80.
  4. Repair, often on the same visit. Our trucks carry the most commonly needed repair parts, so many jobs are finished on the day of the service call. If a part has to be ordered, we schedule the return visit with you.

Repair or Replace Your Oven?

Elements, igniters, sensors, door locks and hinges are the bulk of oven repairs, and they cost far less than a new oven. That’s especially true for wall ovens, where replacement also means fitting the cabinet cut-out. A failed control board on an older budget range is the main case where replacing can be the better call. We’ll lay out both options.

Oven Repair FAQ

Why does my gas oven click but not light?

On most gas ovens the igniter glows rather than sparks. If you see it glowing for a minute or more with no flame, the igniter has usually weakened and needs replacing. It’s one of the most common oven repairs.

Is it safe to use the oven if it’s heating unevenly?

Usually yes, but food may cook poorly. If you notice sparking from an element, a burning electrical smell or a gas smell, stop using it and call us (or your gas utility for a gas smell).

Can you repair a wall oven without removing it?

Many repairs, such as elements, sensors, igniters and door parts, are done from the front. Some control and wiring repairs require sliding the oven out of the cabinet, which we handle carefully.

How long does an oven repair take?

Many repairs are finished in a single visit, since our trucks carry the most common parts. Control boards and model-specific parts sometimes have to be ordered.
