Dishwasher Problems We Fix

Dishwasher not draining

Start with the filter in the bottom of the tub, since most modern dishwashers have one that needs regular cleaning. Beyond that, a kinked drain hose, a clogged air gap, or a garbage disposal that was just installed with its knockout plug still in place will all stop the drain. If those are clear, the drain pump or its check valve has probably failed.

Dishes not getting clean

Clogged spray arms, a dirty filter, low water temperature or a weak circulation pump are the usual reasons. Run the kitchen tap until it’s hot before starting a cycle, use fresh detergent, and don’t block the spray arms with tall items. If dishes are still dirty, we test the wash motor, the inlet valve and the heater.

Dishwasher not drying

Many dishwashers, especially European models, dry by condensation and rely on rinse aid, so plastics stay wet by design. If glass and metal also come out soaked, check the rinse aid dispenser first, then the heating element, the vent or fan, and the high-limit thermostat.

Dishwasher leaking

Leaks usually come from a worn door gasket, a cracked spray arm, the pump seals, a loose connection underneath, or the wrong detergent. Regular dish soap produces suds that push water out of the door. A dishwasher that isn’t level can also leak at the front corners.

Dishwasher won’t start or stops mid-cycle

The door latch and its switch are the most common culprits, followed by the control board, the thermal fuse and the touchpad. Child-lock and delay-start settings can also look like a failure, so check them first.

Grinding, humming or a bad smell

Grinding often means glass or a bone in the pump. Humming with no water movement can be a jammed pump. Odors come from food trapped in the filter, the gasket or the drain path.

Repair or Replace Your Dishwasher?

Drain pumps, inlet valves, door latches, gaskets, spray arms and heating elements are routine dishwasher repairs. A leaking tub or a failed main control on an older, entry-level unit is where replacement often makes more sense. We’ll tell you straight.

Dishwasher Repair FAQ

Why is there standing water in the bottom of my dishwasher?

A small amount of water around the filter is normal in some models. More than that usually means a clogged filter, a kinked drain hose, a blocked air gap or a failing drain pump.

Is it normal for plastic dishes to stay wet?

Yes, especially in condensation-drying models. Plastic doesn’t hold heat the way glass and ceramics do. Rinse aid helps a lot.

How long should a dishwasher last?

Many last around 10 years, depending on use and water conditions. Keeping the filter clean and using rinse aid helps. See our guide on extending the life of your dishwasher.

Can you fix a dishwasher that won’t start?

Yes. Door latches, switches, thermal fuses and controls are common, repairable causes.
